How many of us want that magic wand to work and
get us the desired result even before facing the exam or some short cut that
will help us score higher. Unfortunately, nothing of this sort will happen but
we can be a bit more careful and follow some strategies to maximize our scores
to the best of our abilities. Well this is a list that every parent has been
repeating to their kid since their class 5 exams, but, we want to reiterate the
same so that you don't miss out on anything for your big day.
Here goes the list of seven steps to success:
1. Time is precious
The exam requires you to answer 100 questions in Paper-I and 80 in Paper-II, in 2 hours each. Where questions in Paper-II might take time solving, Paper-I questions will require re-reading as options are very close to each other. So, make a time budget mentally as to how much time you want to give for each question and which section you want to approach first in Paper-II, Maths, English etc.Do not waste your time in reading the question paper initially as there is no choice and you would just be wasting time. As soon as you are done with formalities of forms, start answering questions.

2. Answer the
easy questions first
From last year, UPSC has
asked candidates to fill OMR sheets in black pen. So, make sure you answer only
those questions in first round which you are hundred percent sure about and
work straight till the end of paper and you can return to difficult ones later.
3. Be cautious
of negative marking
Try not to answer any
questions that you have no idea about. Attempt only those where you are
confused between two options.
4. Read the
instructions carefully
In last 2 years, few
candidates missed out on decision making questions as they didn't read the
instructions carefully and were not aware that these questions didn't have any
negative marking. So, utilize the time given before start of exam to read the
instructions. Also, look out for directions right before questions if there can
be more than one answer etc.
5. Double
check questions with qualifiers
Reread the questions
that have qualifying words like "all-some-none-most", "must-
seldom- never", "largest-smallest-best-worst" etc. This will
help you more in Paper-II in data sufficiency kind of questions.
6. Use of
Black Ball point pen only in OMR
From last year, UPSC
requires you to fill in answer sheet using black pen, so the question of
changing answers doesn't exist. So mark your answers carefully and make sure
you don't stain the OMR and fill the ovals as prescribed.
7. Carry your
stuff
Last but not the least,
remember if you are going for a war, you would need your arms and ammunition.
Make sure you have your pens, clipboard (try to carry one as if you get a bad
desk you might tear your OMR sheet), watch and most importantly your admit card
with you. Also, if some of you need to carry some medicines please do so.
